We will consider four possibilities: physical necessity, random chance, intelligent design, or the existence of a multiverse with different physical laws. Particularly intriguing is Lee Smolin's theory of "cosmic natural selection," according to which universes evolve through black holes, similar to living organisms. We are part of this cosmic miracle, stardust that has become self-aware and questions its origins.
