Metals in the energy and digital transition. The Achilles heel of the energy and digital transition is its absolute dependence on rare metals. In this first session, the debate focuses on the geopolitical repercussions of this necessity and its implications for the European Union. The climate crisis makes it necessary and urgent to replace fossil energies with renewables, but we must not forget one key issue: the green and digital technologies that will make this possible are based on non-renewable materials and require many more metals than fossil energies, metals that are finite and, in many cases, scarce. The distribution and scarcity of rare metals is altering the global geopolitical order and the European Union will be no stranger to its consequences. In the 21st century, the country that dominates their export and consumption is China, which also has a monopoly on a group of metals known as rare earths. The West's dependence on China is not limited to raw materials, but also to the need for green and digital technologies. In this context, will it be possible to guarantee a sufficient and clean supply of the metals required for the energy and digital transition? What is the European Union's approach to achieving its strategic autonomy? What are the keys that will enable us to look to the future with optimism? Speakers: Henrike Hahn, German Member of the European Parliament and member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and of the delegations for relations with China and the United States. She previously worked as a strategy consultant for technology companies in Paris and Munich. She believes in the greening of industry and the socio-ecological transformation of the economy. Guillaume Pitron, investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker. He is the author of a hundred reports, investigations and documentaries in more than 40 countries. In 2018, he published the book The War of Rare Metals: the dark side of the energy transition and digitization. Richard Wouters, researcher at Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks, the think tank of Dutch Greens. He leads the project Metals for a green and digital Europe for Green European Foundation. Moderator: Carol García Toledano, member of the board of trustees of Green Transition. Journalist and political scientist. Communication coordinator at Alianza por la Solidaridad- ActionAid. Organized by: Green European Foundation (GEF), with the collaboration of the Fundación Transición Verde and La Casa Encendida.
