But it's not fancier, it's not faster, it's not bigger, no the difference is even more important those things – it goes further. But does it go far enough? In an electric car range is the holy grail. So what BMW has done is increase the capacity of the battery and that allows it to last longer before needing to be recharged. The first i3 had a 60Ah battery with a real world range of about 130km and you can still get that grade. But for a couple of grand more you can get the i3 with a 94Ah battery with a range of up to 200km on a single charge. The i3 is as cool as it always has been. It's bravely different looking to every other car out there and it's truly innovative. Whatever you do don't dismiss this as a gimmick. It's not a regular car fitted with a battery, this is a BMW I car, and like it's big brother the i8 it's made as an electric vehicle from the ground up. As with the 60Ah i3 the 94Ah has an aluminium chassis with the batteries stored under the floor. The motor is at the back of the car on the axle here and it turns the rear wheels. The structure of the car is carbon fibre and plastic with rear suicide doors, or coach doors as BMW would prefer you to call them. So if the outside isn't alien enough for you there's the inside. Right, there's a choice of three trims, Lodge, Loft and the optional Suite for $1538 all with a very environ friendly credentials. Our i3 had the Suite treatment and that gives you an Oak dash, there's leather seats that have been naturally tanned using olive leaf extract and the plastics are from recycled bottles of course. The fibreglass-like stuff on the doors and dashboard is actually made from the Kenaf plant and is a hard wearing organic and renewable material. Standard features for the 94Ah include, 10.25 inch screen, sat nav, digital radio rear view camera, front and rear parking, sensors, auto parking. The 94Ah is also DC charging capable – which is $700 option on the 60Ah. This allows it to use the super fast chargers which you'll start to see more of in the future. Both i3 the 60Ah and 94Ah can also be bought with a range extender – it'll cost you another $6000. In the case of the 94Ah i3 it'll increase that 200km figure to 330km. If you plan on doing bigger miles it's essential in the 60Ah, but not so with the new car with its longer range. Charging's done either using a wall box which costs $1700 and charges the new i3 fully in less than three hours and costs about $5 in electricity. There's a network of chargers called ChargePoint which allows BMW I cars to recharge fully in four hours and for free. As a last resort there's a charging cable which comes with the car and plugs into your home power point and will charge it completely in 14 hours. What's it like to drive? It's awesome. Look I'm a V8 bloke, I play with old school hot rods in my spare time – but this is so much fun. First it's rear wheel drive and that's the start of a good drivers car, next it has an almost 50-50 balance, it has a low centee of gravity because the batteries are under the floor, then there's the acceleration – that electric motor is like a cartoon mouse with a giant mallet – you press the accelerator and wham, instant torque. 0-100km/h in just over 7 seconds… that's not Ferrari fast but it's about as quick as a BMW 220i. The i3 94Ah is the ultimate city car. It's small, it looks like nothing else on the road and if you're getting your electricity from a renewable source environmentally sound and cheap to fuel up. And that extra distance the new battery gives you, should put your mind at ease about running out of electricity. Is the range enough? 200kays. It should be if you're just doing the daily commute and putting it on the charger each night. But apart from all that the best thing about the i3 is that its easy and a hoot to drive.
