Dr Chor Ath General Meckel’s diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, occurring in approximately 2% of the population. A Meckel’s diverticulum is a true diverticulum and is due to failure of regression of the omphalomesenteric duct. The omphalomesenteric duct connects to the yolk sac to the midgut via the umbilical cord. The duct typically regresses by the fifth to eighth week of gestation. The diverticulum typically arises from the antimesenteric border of the distal ileum 40-100 cm from the ileocecal valve. The length of diverticulum can measure up to 5 cm, and the width can measure up to 2 cm. Heterotopic mucosa is present within the diverticulum in 60% of cases, most commonly containing gastric mucosa. Complications of the Meckel’s diverticulum can occur, including the following: Hemorrhage Small-intestine obstruction Diverticulitis Perforation “Rule of 2’s” of Meckel’s diverticulum: Incidence: Occurs in approximately 2% of the population. Location: 2 ft from the ileocecal valve. Size: 2 inches in length. Symptoms: Occur before the age of 2 years old. A Littre hernia is an inguinal hernia containing a Meckel’s diverticulum.
