The Mehter is an Ottoman Turkish military band, which contains the distinction of being one of the oldest bands in the world. After the military modernization of the Ottoman Empire in the 1800s, the Ottoman military apparatus was completely changed. However this was not enough to save them from the disastrous Russo-Turkish war of 1877, in which the Ottoman Empire lost much of its Balkan holdings. Despite this, the Ottomans were able to reach a spiritual victory at the Battle of Plevne, as field marshal (Ghazi) Osman Nuri Pasha was able to inflict heavy casualties on the Russians, holding the city for five months.
