Apocalyptic fiction originated as literary fiction more than 200 years ago, and it has returned to its roots with renewed vigor in recent years. Intriguingly, many recent apocalypses have been written by women or feature female main characters -- a dramatic departure from most of the subgenre's history, and it also coincides with significant thematic shifts in the stories being told. This is an overview of the history of apocalyptic literary fiction and the roles that women have played in it. It's part of my survey of the wide range and history of more than 300 end-of-the-world novels.
