How to Build a Self Watering Garden any size using Sub-Irrigation

Learn how to build a SIP garden. SIPs ( Sub-Irrigation Planter System) is inspired by the fundamental principles of a natural water table. The soil on top, water underneath. When clicked together and installed in your garden - SIPs emulate these natural principles which allow water to be wicked up into the soil evenly and consistently over time, creating the perfect growing environment for your plants to thrive. SIPs reduce water consumption by up to 80%, limit water losses from evaporation, and radically shift the need for daily watering down to once a week - or less. Learn how you can build your very own professional quality self-watering raised garden bed. Using readily available materials in these simple 9 steps. Steps 1 - Drill Overflow a) Ensure site is level & free from obstructions and/or sharp objects b) Drill the overflow hole at 3" up from the INSIDE of the bottom of your garden. c) This will align the overflow on-center with the top of the SIPs once they are installed. Steps 2 - Install the Liner Note: Through all steps, be sure to NOT puncture the liner to keep it water tight! a) Place your pre-folded liner into your garden. Make sure it’s tucked nicely into the bottom corners. b) Begin by folding the flaps up. Dry fit your liner so that you’ve got a nice tight fit. All folds should end up at the top of the garden - fold this way so that water from the reservoir cannot run down through any of the folds c) Staple the liner into place along the top of your garden. d) Trim any excess liner above the rim Steps 3 - Installing the OverFlow a) Press gently on the liner to find the hole you drilled in the box for your OverFlow. Use your utility knife to cut a small X in the center. b) Unscrew one of the wingnuts and insert the OverFlow pipe from inside out, ensuring the rubber gasket is on the inside, and fasten the wingnut on the outside tightly. Steps 4 - Click Your SIPs together & Install the Reservoir a) Click your SIPs together to form the shape of your garden. If some of the SIPs prove difficult to clip together, turn them upside down and press down on the tab firmly. b) With the wicks pointing down, place the SIP grid into your planter. Along the edge with tabs, bend tabs upward as required to adjust the fit. Steps 5 - Insert the WaterStem a) Install the WaterStem into the pre-drilled hole in your SIP grid. It should be nice and snug. b) Insert the tube all the way in, until it rests lightly on the bottom. c) Insert the float gauge into the WaterStem Pro tip: Install the WaterStem and OverFlow at opposite ends of the planter. Steps 6 - Fill with Soil a) Fill your garden with a peat moss or coconut coir-based organic container blend soil. If available, first fill just the SIP wicks with vermiculite or straight peat moss or coco coir. Steps 7 - Top Water & Plant a) Water thoroughly from top to kick-off capillary action. Plant your seeds or starts. Top water again to settle them in. Steps 8 - Fill the Reservoir a) Top water for the first few weeks until roots are established. Then simply watch the float gauge and fill the reservoir when needed.
