Though, they are called karakalpaks, they saved many traditions of their nation, tracing back to far prehistoric times. One of these traditions is kalym. Kalym is the term of Turkic origin. It is old pre-wedding custom. Kalym was spread amongst many tribes and folks of the world. During several centuries this customs this custom has been changed, took absolutely other meaning, differing from the primary one. Until recent, it was considered that kalym is tribute, which was paid by kinfolks of bridegroom for bride and it was an indemnity to her family for loss of working woman and property that she brought to the family of husband.
