Recorded in New York City on February 10th, 1931. Want to hear more of Will Osborne? Here is a 5 year long effort to make all of is 400+ recordings available to everyone: • (WIP) Will Osborne Audible Discography Pro... That February, about Will's biggest concern aside from running his orchestra, union bills, and back to back radio, stage, and record dates; was the still-ongoing Vallee-Osborne feud. Since it all started in the fall of 1929, there had been poetry written about it, proposed boxing matches, lawsuits and even open physical fights amongst New York as to "who's favorite crooners crooned first, and which is stealing each other's style?", as the national had turned into two divided groups when it came to fans of radio crooners: "Osborne-Ites" and Vallee-Ites". Other names for Will's side included "Willian's" and "Osborners" at a time, (but none have that ring to it as the first in my opinion). By this February, a man was shot by his wife for saying that Vallee wasn't a good singer, meanwhile Rudy Vallee himself was, in Will's own words "getting sore" over what they had both been in on with this feud since the get-go. So Will was looking to stop it cause it was no longer fun. Vallee also got attacked recently, with one of his own Yale collegiates throwing a grapefruit at his face, which missed and destroyed his band's drum set. Will probably worries the same would happen to him! Aside from that context, as for this specific session, it had been listed for decades by discographers that there was a trumpeter on session by the name of "George McGhee". 4 songs were made on this session, "Hello Beautiful!", "One Little Raindrop", "By The River Saint Marie", and "By My Side". A few years ago, the first two were uploaded onto youtube, and we could hear no such trumpet. And with these uploads, we finally have the elusive latter two songs finally audible! And with that said, we can all hear for a fact there is NO trumpet at all! Proving once and for all that aside from one instance of a muted trumpet back in '29, there were no instances of Osborne having brass prior to the summer of 1931!
