Adolf Zukor, founder of Paramount Pictures and one of the pioneers of filmmaking in Hollywood, was born in Ricse on 7 January 1873. He lost both his parents when still young so in 1888 he emigrated to the United States, where initially he worked in the store of fur traders in New York and Chicago before opening his own furrier workshop. His professional association with cinema started when, in 1904, he went into business operating a penny arcade showing 3-minute movie clips. In 1912 he founded Famous Players Film Company (later Paramount), which launched as a distributor but then soon started making films as well. His business methods – the employment of famous actors, distribution techniques and company organization – served as the basis for Hollywood as we know it today. In 1973, on his 100th birthday, the father of the ‘Dream Factory’ was honoured amidst great fanfare. He received an Oscar for his lifework as well as a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
