Thanks to the crew at @RoadsterShop and @OilandWhiskey for having me out and making some time to have some good fashioned fun. To Check out my episode of Oil and Whiskey Podcast: • Zac Mertens (Mister Zachary) | From Hoonig... Breakdown on the Twin Turbo LS7 Grand National Build - Words by Steven Rupp @Motortrend: Starting with a Dart iron block the 427 LS-based mill is full of all the right parts, and on Ignite "Yellow" E98 fuel made a tick over 1,500 hp on the dyno! But what if you can't find E98 fuel? Well, we'll get to that in a moment. Precision supplied the 64/66 mirror-image turbos as well as the wastegates and BOV, and the whole deal is controlled by a Holley Dominator system. Backing up the 427 is a full-manual valvebody 4L80 transmission from Bowler Performance. The system is flex-fuel-compatible and adjusts accordingly for any percentage of ethanol. The entire chassis was built with the driveline so it could be fitted to the car. The one-off wheels were done by Greening Auto Company and come in at 18x10.5-inch front and 19x12-inch rear! The idea was to replicate the look of the factory GN wheel. RS did a cool homage to the original GN logo, which was a 6 (for the V-6 engine) made out of a turbo design. The new logo uses two turbos to create an 8 for the new V-8 powerplant. Whoever came up with that deserves a raise. RS created all-new badges and emblems for the Grand National, including these billet hood emblems. With a key, you can choose between four tune maps. The "low" setting of 1,100 hp is for 93 octane and goes up from there based on the gas you can find, such as e98 or 110-octane gasoline. We're not sure about you, but our first thought on seeing the dash display was a flashback to the old Knight Rider series. Somehow Roadster Shop's Vehicle Control System main gauge display looks both retro and cutting-edge at the same time. It also showcases a ton of info from vehicle speed to trans temp, ambient air temp, converter lockup status, boost pressure, and even your current stereo selection! We just want to know if it talks with a pretentious British accent. The entire dash was 3D-printed and then leather-wrapped by JK Automotive Design. Housed in the machined billet center console is a Lightning Rod-style shifter setup that incorporates a line-lock, trans brake, and torque converter lockup switches. More retro high-tech goodness can be found in the RS Vehicle Control System infotainment display. This screen controls the audio system, Vintage Air system, traction control, launch control, line-lock, and the exhaust cutouts. With a single swipe down on the vehicle page you can quickly engage the launch control, turn on the line-lock, disable the traction control, and open the exhaust cutouts! The whole car uses RS solid-state CANBUS modules so there are no traditional fuses, relays, or circuit breakers. 00:00 - INTRO 01:00 - twin turbo Grand National walkaround 07:42 - Twin Turbo Chop 08:05 - TT GN Drive and Burnouts 11:25 - Roadster Shop, Shop walk through
