This story from Rhana Hashemi was told live on stage in April 2025 at Stanford University as part of Testing Ground Live! Social Science on Stage, a storytelling show produced by Stanford Impact Labs (SIL) in collaboration with The Story Collider. Rhana Hashemi is a Ph.D. student in Social Psychology at Stanford University. She founded and leads Know Drugs, an educational organization advancing harm reduction drug education for youth, and is adapting an intervention called Lifting the Bar (https://impact.stanford.edu/investmen...) to support youth substance use issues. The Lifting the Bar project supports strong relationships for youth in difficult circumstances by providing a platform for students to introduce themselves to an educator of their choosing, in their own words, bypassing pre-existing stereotypes and misconceptions. The Lifting the Bar team is led by Dr. Greg Walton, Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, and the project has been twice-funded by Stage 2 investments from Stanford Impact Labs (SIL). Guided by a mission of partnering with communities to put social science to work for society, Stanford Impact Labs (SIL) invests to learn what works in designing, testing, and scaling solutions; trains scholars and practitioners to harness data and evidence for impact; and promotes a culture of public impact in higher education. Stanford Impact Labs is a university-wide initiative established in the School of Humanities and Sciences.
