The treatment of mediastinal teratomas depends on their size and when they are diagnosed. http://fetalsurgery.chop.edu Prenatally diagnosed mediastinal teratomas that are small to medium sized can be followed and removed after birth. Larger fetal tumors that compress the fetal heart and lungs can lead to hydrops (fetal heart failure), and may require fetal intervention. Mediastinal teratomas can be resected (removed) before birth by expert fetal surgeons. Drs. N. Scott Adzick and Alan Flake from the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia discuss the treatment options for mediastinal teratomas, including surgery to remove mediastinal teratomas (teratoma resection) and prenatal intervention that may include an EXIT procedure. During an EXIT procedure, the baby is partially delivered while still connected to the placenta until an airway is established and doctors can safely deliver the baby and remove the tumor. Watch this full video series to learn more about the various types of teratomas, the importance of accurate diagnosis and monitoring, long-term outcomes, and the most advanced treatment options for fetal tumors currently available.
