Whether it was a high primer or mechanical malfunction, I can't seem to put my finger on what caused my P556 to fire without operating the trigger. The safety was in the "Fire" position when this happened and in all likelihood, there was something in the way I manipulated the action during the preceding misfire that caused the hammer to follow the bolt forward and slam that round off. Nothing like this ever happened again with any of the three Sig 556s that I own. More importantly is that everyone who watches this learns the same lesson I did. Even expensive, high quality firearms can malfunction unexpectedly so we always have to be considering the possibilities when handling them. Just think what would have happened if the thing would have "run away" and fired the entire magazine when the bolt slam fired that top round. The cyclic rate would have been incredibly high and I doubt that I could react fast enough to get control of it before it rotated out of my grip under recoil. After posting this video a reliable source told me that this situation was set up by the round that did not go all the way into battery. He claims that when the hammer fell but did not fire the previous round, it set up an abnormal relationship of the disconnector to the hammer which allowed it to trip when the action slammed closed.
