The two pieces are recorded here as a single file. The division is at 15'43". I find it very pleasing to play them in this order. La Sindone is performed by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra; Da Pacem Domine is performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir accompanied by the orchestra; both directed by Tonu Kaljuste. La Sindone essentially means "Jesus' shroud". After a harsh opening which presumably depicts the residues of the final pangs of death, the music quietly enters into a kind of meditation on the shroud as it lay over the body of Jesus during his 3 days in the tomb. The music gradually unfolds the shroud of Turin transmuting it into a musical entity. And then, at last, the three days are over, and the promise of God the Father is to be fulfilled: the glorious resurrection and ascension! Da Pacem Domine is a prayer of peace dedicated to the victims of the Madrid bombings in Spain on 11 March 2004. It is a short sublime work for choir and very subtle accompaniment from the orchestra. The latter is scarcely distinguishable from the voices in this excellent recording, but adds depth and warmth to the vocal harmonies. Both these pieces are extracted from the CD "In Principio" ECM 2050 which contains many other fine recordings by this composer.
