I Tried Horse Therapy

In this video, I try horse therapy for the first time! Horses are powerful and majestic animals said to represent freedom and independence, and are known to possess special intuitive and psychic abilities. Horses are also said to have certain healing powers and be able to help people work through challenges and release emotional trauma. Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT), also known as horse therapy, is a type of experiential therapy where the participant will connect with horses for healing and therapeutic benefits. When I learned this existed, I really wanted to try it out. So I went to meet with a woman named Michelle Peterson at her ranch near Sedona, Arizona, where she leads horse medicine journeys. I was excited to talk with Michelle to learn more about what she does and then try horse therapy for myself. Horses and humans have shared a close social relationship for thousands of years. The known therapeutic benefit of horses dates back to ancient Greece when the famous physician Hippocrates, also known as the father of medicine, started writing about the therapeutic potential of horseback riding. Horse therapy involves feedback and mirroring as horses are very observant animals that mirror humans’ behaviors and emotions. Generally, working with horses is said to improve assertiveness, confidence, communication, emotional awareness, empathy, impulse control, problem-solving, and social skills. Although there are no large-scale clinical trials involving horse therapy and more research is needed, the current studies on horse therapy have demonstrated positive benefits. A 2019 meta-analysis including 15 studies and a total of 390 participants ages 3 to 16 found that equine therapy is a useful way to help improve the psychosocial functioning of children with autism., According to a 2016 meta-analysis including seven studies of nearly 400 participants, horse therapy was shown to improve the overall level of functioning amongst at-risk teenagers. A 2011 review of nine peer-reviewed studies found that horse riding therapy had a positive effect on motor function for participants suffering from cerebral palsy. This year, the Equine Science Center at Rutgers University announced an 8-week research trial to examine horse therapy in the treatment of PTSD for veterans. When I went to go do this experience, I honestly had no idea what to expect. I figured it would be fun to connect with horses, but I didn’t really understand how magical, intuitive, and psychic these creatures are. I was surprised at the emotion that came up unexpectedly. It just happened and I couldn’t explain why but it was something about that ranch and feeling so much presence and safety to be able to feel my emotions and release old stories I was holding onto. Overall, this was such a beautiful experience and something I would love to do again!
