From Tradition to Transformation: A Story of Gender Equality in Northeast Nigeria

In the heart of Northeast Nigeria, particularly in Michika and Guyuk Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Adamawa State, a quiet revolution is taking place. This story, "From Tradition to Transformation," takes you on an inspiring journey into the lives of individuals and communities transformed by the Promoting Women's Rights and Gender Equality (WoRGE) Project. For over a decade, communities in Northeast Nigeria have grappled with the devastating impacts of prolonged conflict, which has deepened existing gender inequalities and marginalized women, girls, and persons with disabilities (PWDs). This film sheds light on the challenges faced – from socio-economic disempowerment and exclusion from decision-making to vulnerability to violence and harmful practices. Launched in December 2023, the WoRGE project, implemented by Oxfam, CEPAD, and CRUDAN, and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), as well as co-funded by the European Union (EU), aimed to embed gender-responsive planning and build sustainable livelihoods for women through conflict-sensitive approaches. Through powerful narratives and firsthand accounts, you will witness: Increased Participation of Women in Leadership: Discover how 37 women now hold leadership positions, including groundbreaking appointments of women and PWDs to traditional councils. Economic Empowerment: See how Gender Action Learning System (GALS) training has enabled 74 individuals to start new businesses, and how the installation of 13 milling and de-husking machines is saving women over an hour of time daily, freeing them for productive activities. Advocacy for Rights: Learn about the successful advocacy efforts that led to 25 women being allocated farmlands, challenging long-standing discriminatory practices. Shifting Norms: Hear from men who, through Rapid Care Analysis (RCA) and positive masculinity frameworks, are now actively sharing domestic duties and championing gender equality within their households and communities. Strengthened Institutions: Understand how local governments are developing gender-responsive plans and budgeting, ensuring equitable allocation of resources for all.
