Many worry that stepping back will cause their teen to struggle or lose control of their future. This can lead to over-involvement, where teens feel pressured to meet expectations rather than develop their own sense of success and self-worth. Additionally, high-achieving parents—who are often under significant pressure themselves—can unintentionally add stress to their teen’s life by comparing them to others or setting unrealistic standards. This only increases the emotional strain on both the parent and the teen. Many parents seek out external support, such as counselors or therapists, but these solutions often fail to address the root cause—the ongoing emotional dynamic between parent and teen. The result is a cycle of stress, overwhelm, and unproductive tension that undermines both the parent’s and the teen’s emotional well-being. The reality is that teens need a strong sense of identity in order to develop emotional resilience and learn to navigate life’s challenges. Parents, on the other hand, need to embrace their own personal growth and emotional healing in order to step back from controlling behaviors and support their teen from a place of empowerment. Both parent and teen must embrace this growth to maintain a healthy, balanced relationship. What I’ve found is that parents of high-achieving teens often find it difficult to strike the right balance between offering support and giving their teens the independence they need to grow. In my experience, many parents worry that if they step back too much, their teen will struggle or lose control of their future. This leads to over-involvement, where the teen feels pressure to constantly meet expectations rather than developing a sense of personal success and self-worth.[ I’ve also noticed that high-achieving parents, themselves under significant pressure, can unintentionally add stress to their teen’s life by comparing them to others or setting unrealistic standards.
