Can you be friends with someone with different political opinions than you?

“You don’t agree with me so I hate you, I’m not gonna interact to you or listen to anything you say”. We’re not 5 anymore. Politics isn’t to put people against each other and create two teams. Politics is different ideologies, different “suggestions” to how we’ll work together and create a society where we can live together in the best way possible. It isn’t about sitting there and waiting for the other side to finally realise you’re in the right. It’s listening to each other, being open minded, critical and sceptical, to broaden your perspective, help your views and opinion evolve, thus help you grow as a person. You may keep your views in the end, but it doesn’t hurt to listen to why someone thinks the way they do. Just because they disagree doesn’t mean they’re terrible people. Yes, terrible people exist in all areas of the political spectrum, but most people aren’t trying to be terrible, they try to do what they believe is right. They may be misinformed or have a good reason to why they think that way (you just need to listen to understand). It’s all about perspective, there isn’t always a factual right or wrong (though there is a line- discrimination is absolutely not acceptable, we need to treat each other as humans.) If you do keep your views after listening to someone, then having heard about their side of the story also helps you construct better arguments. Also, abortion rarely comes up while hanging out with a friend. You can have great chemistry and enjoy hanging out together despite having different views on abortion. I also want to clarify that again, there IS ABSOLUTELY a line. I wouldn’t be friends with someone who think I should die for being trans. But would I be friends with someone who didn’t fully understand it but still supported me? Yes. Just because someone doesn’t agree doesn’t mean they they’d like you to die. Jumping to conclusions and screaming at people doesn’t solve anything. Let me know what you think of this down below, but please stay respectful. Thank you for watching!
