Its 1973, Benny Goodman and his All Star Sextet played Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion. This is about the recording for the broadcast. Except for a couple of old buggers, the cast have long since died. Not sure the exact date in 73 it was recorded, however, this is likely the first time it’s been aired since the original broadcast. ABC Radio likely had rights for one broadcast and maybe one replay. Cleon Dennis, the producer is no longer with us, all the musicians have long since gone. Searching Google, there’s nothing, just a few pics of the musicians, not from the gig. Maybe I need to brush up on my research skills. Ive had the full one hour broadcast for some time and I’ve been thinking how best to showcase it. After all those years I still get goose bumps, it’s raw, exciting, outstanding musical skill. This is a taste, not the full broadcast. Captured in glorious mono, the recording setup was very simple. Three RCA OB amps, a few inline mic level pads (listening back, could have used more) Mono Line level splitter, 2 Mk4 Nagra recorders one bookshelf Celestian monitor speaker and that was it. Microphone list. Neumann U67 on drums, Beyer M88 on kick, M88 on Piano, Beyer M100 on bas suspended inside the bridge, M88 on Clarinet, U67 on Sax, M88 Vibes and I’m not sure what I used on audience. Neumann U67 on Joe Pass’s Gtr amp. There was suggestion I use one AKG C12A for the recording, maybe I did, the room mic. For Cleon Dennis, producer and Clarinet player, this was his dream. This is a radio programme featuring a concert recording. Its not the same as presenting a live concert on radio or Tv. The concept dates back to another time when radio specials included a scripted narrative, linking elements to tell a story. John Reith, BBC’s first head devised the philosophy; whatever you’re doing, stop, sit down and listen. Early on, ABC adopted the practice. This is radio broadcast from another time. Close your eyes, this is how ABC Radio sounded in the early 1970s Producer - Cleon Dennis Recorded - Keith Walker Announcer - Eric Child Edit and compile - John Dimond Tape Op - who knows. Maybe it was Rupert Mazlin Featured musicians Benny Goodman - Clarinet Peter Appleyard - Vibes Monty Budwig - Bass Joe Pass - Guitar John Zoot Sims - Saxaphone Derek Smith - Piano Ron Stevenson - Drums Disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the recording, performance, tunes or images used in creating this video.
