The PDF of this transcription can be downloaded for free here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folder... Well, this is a fun one. And yes, it's been a while. I've finally started getting back into the transcribing game. Anyway, the exciting thing about this is that it's a live recording with an audible piano part! In fact, this whole album set ("In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk") has phenomenally good audio quality for a live recording of this era. It made transcribing even this little chunk of piano playing pretty easy from an audio perspective. However, from a "what the hell is this man playing!?" perspective, this was an absolute monster, which is the reason I've skipped the free-time piano/bass intro, and only done the vamp, head in and first chorus of Miles' solo. The reason that this is weird (if you're interested) is that, whilst this is still the First Great Quintet (Miles, Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb), it's the very end of their run – this was recorded in 1961, and the first (mostly) Second Great Quintet recording was in 1963 ("Seven Steps to Heaven", which was the SGQ minus Wayne Shorter). Consequently, there's lots of hints at the weird shit that the SGQ would get up to, but only hints – it's mixed in with "normal" FGQ-style Wynton Kelly comping (which, let's be honest, is basically how piano players learn how to comp, along with Red Garland with the FGQ). I personally found it really hard to keep the two "worlds" separate when I was transcribing, and I took bloody ages to get going with it because it seemed indecipherable. Anyway, all fun and happiness, here it is. Hopefully you'll be seeing more content from me soon(ish).
