In this powerful episode of DTalks with Dr Kapil, we sit down with Dr Jnanesh Thacker, one of the pioneers of lung transplantation in India, for a deeply moving and insightful conversation on medicine, responsibility, and humanity. Lung transplant surgeons in India are so few that they can literally be counted on fingers. In this episode, we discuss Dr Thacker’s personal journey, including a life-changing moment when he received a call about his own brother suffering from primary pulmonary hypertension—a condition that required a heart–lung transplant. At that time, no one in India was performing the procedure. Tragically, his brother passed away. That loss became a turning point. Determined to change the future of lung transplantation in India, Dr Thacker wrote directly to the world’s first heart–lung transplant surgeon, Dr Bruce Reitz, requesting permission to come as an observer at Stanford University—a decision that would later shape the course of Indian medical history. The episode also explores a moment of national pride—India is currently the only country in its neighborhood performing lung transplants, offering hope to patients at the very last stage of breathlessness. Dr Thacker shares what true dedication looks like—operating for 31 continuous hours, and carrying the belief that every patient is a responsibility, treated with the reverence of God. The conversation dives into timeless clinical wisdom as well—how most diagnoses come from careful history-taking and physical examination, not just reports, and why asking patients about major life stressors in the past five years often reveals what scans cannot. Above all, this episode reminds us that the doctor–patient relationship itself can be healing—sometimes reassurance, trust, and empathy lead to recovery even without major intervention. 🎙️ Follow DTalks with Dr Kapil on other platforms: 📩 Instagram - https://shorturl.at/I51OH 📩 Facebook - https://shorturl.at/TrBxg 📩 LinkedIn: https://shorturl.at/toMB8
