Upper Kala (Kala Zemo ubani) is one of the oldest and largest districts of medieval Tbilisi, situated on the right bank of the Mtkvari River. This historic neighborhood is home to several important landmarks, including the ancient Digmis Kari fortress gates, the charming Rezo Gabriadze Theatre with its unique puppet performances, and the Anchiskhati Church - the oldest surviving church in Tbilisi. Walking through Upper Kala's streets today offers visitors a genuine glimpse into the city's rich medieval past. Chakhrukhadze Street (Georgian: ჩახრუხაძის ქუჩა) is a street in Tbilisi, located in the historic Old Town district, running from Shota Kavlashvili Street to Baratashvili Street. It forms one of the boundaries of Irakli II Square. Shota Kavlashvili Street starts from Abkhazi Street and ends at Irakli II Square. It is located in the Old Upper City within the walls of the late feudal fortress Kala. In the 19th century, it was called Prikaznaya Street. Currently, it is named after Shota Kavlashvili, a distinguished Georgian architect who designed the reconstruction of Baratashvili Street. Sultanishani Street starts from Shota Kavlashvili Street and ends at Ietim Gurji Street. And it also named after Alexander Chikvaidze. Vertskhlis (Silver) Street - Begins from Kote Abkhazi Street and continues until the junction of Pushkin Street and Baratashvili Street. The street branches off from Kote Abkhazi Street at its most pronounced bend; when looking at the map, it appears that Vertskhlis is a continuation of Abkhazi Street. This might have been the case in the medieval period when Vertskhlis ended at the Digomi Gates of Kala fortress. Please, comment, like, share and subscribe, that means a lot to me! 🩵 Like my videos?
