Check out my new cocktail piano ebook! http://www.billspianopages.com/cocktail As a follow-up to my earlier video tutorials on cocktail piano, this slightly longer tutorial takes a detailed look at chord and rhythm-based improvisation in a single song (Georgia On My Mind by Hoagey Carmichael), played in the cocktail piano style. A real advantage of cocktail piano is how relaxed it is as a style. As well as being quite forgiving, this really gives you the opportunity to think about the quality of your chords and improvisation. Cocktail piano can be played very rubato, with only the occasional nod to the actual rhythm of the melody. However, don’t be drawn into the trap of becoming too relaxed when playing. Keep an eye on your intonation, and make sure that your chords don’t begin to sound sloppy. When it comes to knowing which notes to play, it is a massive help to be really familiar with your chords and scales. An awful lot of my improvisation of this kind is based around the chord shapes of chords in the sequence, rather than from the melody. I also occasionally use blues and pentatonic scales. Try to develop the chords by playing them in different inversions, on different parts of the keyboard, and with different rhythms. You can also incorporate runs and arpeggios up and down the keyboard, particularly toward the end of the improvisation. The use of these contrasting high and low registers is another common technique in cocktail piano. Try using both hands to play chord shapes quite quickly, using as much of the keyboard as possible. The sustain pedal is a really useful tool here, however it is all too easy to overuse it. Make sure to pedal between chords, as well as when playing chords with many notes, to avoid a mulchy sound. If you’re unfamiliar with anything I’ve mentioned in this cocktail piano walkthrough, for example chords and improvisation, take a look at some of my other videos. You might also be interested in my book, How to Really Play the Piano, which is really useful for learning the basics of improvisation and chords.
