In Chapter 37 of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Jane returns to the ruins of Thornfield Hall after learning of its destruction by fire. She discovers that the once-grand estate has been burned down by Bertha Mason, Mr. Rochester’s wife, who died in the blaze after setting the house alight. Rochester heroically attempted to save everyone in the fire, but in the process he was gravely injured—losing his sight and one of his hands. Jane learns that Rochester now lives in seclusion at Ferndean, a remote manor deep in the woods. Filled with compassion, love, and renewed independence after her inheritance, Jane goes to him. The chapter highlights themes of redemption, sacrifice, moral growth, and enduring love, as Jane prepares to reunite with Rochester not as his dependent, but as his equal.
