Positioned between the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, this Kra Isthmus has long been viewed as a potential alternative to the Strait of Malacca. Malacca Strait is a narrow waterway that connects Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean) and South China Sea (Pacific). Strait of Malacca is very crucial for China. Most of the oil China imports come from the Middle East and Angola. Majority of China's oil supply pass through Strait of Malacca. India has a strategic advantage over Strait of Malacca. India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands is located at the mouth of the strait. China has long feared that in the event of a diplomatic crisis or war, India could cut block the Strait of Malacca. Therefore, China wants to build an alternative route for its ships. This proposed route passes through Thailand’s Kra Isthmus. China wants to dig a canal here. China needs Thailand's approval for this project. A parliamentary committee in Thailand is scheduled to make recommendations on this canal project in September 2020. However, a section of Indian media claimed that Thailand has already decided to scrap the Kra Canal project. Authenticity of these reports are still unconfirmed. Watch this video for more details.
