I've got a real soft spot for shunters. Despite it being a few years old now, Heljan's Class 05 is a stunning model and I thought it was an ideal candidate for a quick review whilst I was installing a decoder. I have seen one or two examples of DCC Sound installs (LokSound 4 Micro and a sugar cube speaker), but I opted just for a simple Hatton's 6-pin DCC chip...even then, it was a very tight fit! --- This is a 3-in-1 video: a quick historical overview, a look at the model and dcc chip installation. You can jump to different sections as follows: 00:40 – A brief history of the Class 05 shunter 04:20 – Taking a look at Heljan's Class 05 10:48 – Body removal 15:40 – Chip installation 28:38 – Quick run on the rolling road --- Specific items required for this project are: 6-pin DCC decoder Nimble fingers Various other tools and materials are required, including: Jeweller's screwdrivers Kapton tape Whilst I used a Hatton's chip in the video and it works fine, it required a bit of filing.
