Welcome to A-Z History! The Formation of the Arab League and Its Impact on the Palestine Issue Context & Role of Palestine After World War II, the pan-Arab unity movement gained momentum, leading to the establishment of the Arab League in 1945. Palestine participated in the League’s meetings and was treated as an equal member. The League supported Palestinian demands, including the cessation of Jewish immigration and the pursuit of independence. Impact of the Arab League Positive: The League backed Palestinian claims. Negative: The League decided who represented Palestine, leading to political decisions being made in Cairo instead of Jerusalem, weakening Palestinian nationalism. Re-establishment and Dissolution of the Arab Higher Committee (AHC) The AHC was re-established under the Arab League’s sponsorship but quickly dissolved due to internal conflicts. The Arab League intervened and formed the Arab Higher Executive (AHE), with Haj Amin al-Husseini’s involvement. The AHE was later renamed AHC, creating the appearance of a more unified Palestinian leadership. The Palestine Issue at the United Nations Britain transferred the Palestine issue to the UN as both Arabs and Jews rejected compromise solutions. The "Exodus" Incident: The British interception of the ship carrying Jewish refugees had a major impact on public opinion. The UN Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) was established to study the issue. The UN Ad Hoc Committee on Palestine drafted a resolution for the UN General Assembly. Diplomatic lobbying: Both Jews and Arabs worked to influence UN delegates. US & Soviet Union support for partition gave the Jewish side an advantage. Britain announced its withdrawal from Palestine by August 1, 1948. Escalating Conflict & Control of Supply Routes December 1947 – March 1948: Arab ambushes severely impacted Jewish supply convoys to settlements in Galilee, Negev, and Jerusalem. The Haganah struggled to protect convoys, suffering heavy casualties. By March 1948, as British troops withdrew, they ceased assisting Jewish convoys. Jewish forces also launched countermeasures to disrupt Arab transport. Disasters of Late March 1948 & Haganah's Strategic Shift A series of military defeats forced Haganah to shift strategy, from convoy defense to attacking Arab strongholds. March 27, 1948: A large Jewish convoy left Jerusalem for the Etzion Bloc, but was ambushed on the return journey by thousands of Arab fighters. Outcome: The Haganah lost many armored vehicles and dozens of troops. These defeats signaled the urgent need for a strategic change, as Jewish forces faced the risk of losing the war. 00:00 Staking Claims: The Historical Background 01:35:40 UNSCOP and the Partition Resolution 02:24:14 The First Stage of the Civil War
