We were incredibly lucky to film this intense territorial battle between two male Red Lechwe. These antelopes live in the wetlands and floodplains of southern Africa, and their unique habitat means their disputes are always a spectacular, splashing affair. The males have those magnificent, lyre-shaped horns which they use to lock in a shoving match to determine dominance. It takes an immense amount of strength and stamina to compete in this way. The Red Lechwe is one of the continent's most water-dependent antelopes. Their waterproof coat and slightly elongated hooves allow them to thrive in these marshy conditions. As the famed conservationist Peter Capstick once noted about Africa's wild places, "It is not the mountains that are the highest, nor the forests that are the densest, nor the deserts that are the driest. It is the place where life comes in a rush." This intense interaction truly shows life coming in a rush in the dynamic wetland environment. We hope you enjoy this raw display of nature!
