1) Ouverture: 00:00 2) Andantino: 3:18 3) Presto: 5:46 In the year 1756, Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg published in Leipzig a volume entitled “Raccolta delle più Nuove Compositioni de Clavicembalo di Differenti Maestri ed Autori” (“Collection of the newest harpsichord Compositions by various Masters and Authors.” I have no idea why the title was in Italian, and not German.) This collection is indeed quite fascinating, for it presents fine keyboard works by a good selection of composers of the day, most of them based in Berlin. Another volume was published in 1757; possibly, Marpurg planned to prepare such collections on a yearly basis. Marpurg must have been a fascinating man. We know but little of his early life; he is supposed to have studied philosophy, but was obviously very talented for music. He rubbed elbows with a number of great people of the “Enlightenment”, such as Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, d’Alembert and Voltaire. It’s hard not to envy him! Those who knew him found him to be “courteous and open-hearted”, yet he had a taste for debate and dispute, which soured his relationships on more than one occasion. An author as well as a composer, he penned a tract on the fugue in 1753, and this work is still used to gain a better understanding of J.S. Bach’s Art of the Fugue. He wrote extensively on music, even a treatise on the ancient water organ (though he never got around to finishing that particular work). Marpurg was able to compose in a variety of styles, from the baroque fugue to the style of C.P.E. Bach, yo the French style that was so popular in Paris at the time. I feel that Marpurg is a musician whose works – both compositions as well as books – well deserve to be better known today!
