Franz Joseph Haydn: Symphony No. 46 in B major, Hob. I/46 (with Score) Composed: 1772 Performance: Cologne Chamber Orchestra 00:00 1. Vivace (B major) 06:05 2. Poco adagio (B minor) 11:17 3. Menuet. Allegretto (B major) – Trio (B minor) 14:20 4. Finale. Presto e scherzando (B major) B Major was not an often-used key during the Classical Era due to technical and intonation problems and because it was among the less resonant keys. Haydn used it here for one of his more intellectual symphonies. In a famous letter to his father, Mozart wrote of a symphony in which he would write passages whose learned nature would in itself delight the most sensitive connoisseur, while the effect these made would also be pleasing to the average audience member, who would take equal delight without knowing why. Here, Haydn is a little less solicitous of the average audience member: The work is still pleasing to all, but more delightful to those who are in on the technical details. The first movement is rather terse. The experienced listener recognizes the main motto of four notes as one that is made for contrapuntal development. Haydn first provides the first three notes with a countersubject. In the development, he uses a theme from the four-note motive in counterpoint with itself as a canon. Haydn then plays a trick on the connoisseurs by seeming to reach the recapitulation, but this proves to be just another section of the development. Finally, when the real recapitulation is reached, Haydn introduces a true contrapuntal theme. The mood is appropriately schoolmasterly: A little dry and plain-sounding, which is probably part of the joke. The second movement provides a relaxation, using a graceful Italian-style melody in the rhythm of a gentle dance, the siciliano. It is in the easier key of B minor. The Minuet section is a slow and graceful one, with a sighing motive. The melody of the trio has an odd melody reminiscent of Balkan folk music. The finale is a very witty movement, constantly upsetting the connoisseurs' expectations with sudden insertions of rests and an exceptionally unusual feature, the reappearance of the main section of the preceding Minuet movement, which is quoted in its entirety (though without repeats) before the fast concluding movement's main theme returns. This in its turn trails off into a long rest, the horns play a comical low note, and the main theme comes back one more time to conclude the symphony.
