In this episode we finally begin constructing the new pistol and rifle range on the farm. Years ago, we setup a 100 yard rifle range on the farm. Our friends and family enjoyed coming out, having some BBQ and putting some holes in targets. It was nice having the ability to shoot skeet, pistols and rifles any time we wanted. But life sometimes throws you curve balls and the only real constant in life is change. Our new neighbors to the South decided to build their new house just past our backstop on the rifle range, putting themselves right in line with our line of fire. Rendering our old rifle range pretty much useless! It's been a few years since we could use our old range, and we really missed it! So after we dug the pond, we had a LOT of dirt we needed to do something with and we had the bright idea of moving our range and re-orienting it so there wasn't anything "down range" of our line of fire. We piled up a semi-circular dirt pile to act as an earthen berm backstop that would stop ANYTHING we wanted to throw at it, just short of portable field artillery. We are lining the front face with railroad ties from McCoy's lumber company. Held up by a bunch of old retired telephone poles from the Bluebonnet Electric Co-Op and held in place by a bunch of long screws to keep them from shifting. We will install some 4'x8' sheets of replaceable plywood on the front face of railroad ties to be able to tack targets to. This will give us an easily replaceable face that we can chew up with our activities to extend the life of the wall... When the face gets all chewed up, after a few years, we can just replace the face in an afternoon. The idea was to build something that could handle .50 caliber rounds and be easily repairable for years and years of use. In the end we hope to have a wall about 7 ft. tall and about 45 ft. wide that can adsorb pretty much anything we want to throw at it and survive for about 40 years (or more!). Setting the “base” and getting the bottom row of railroad ties all nice and level took us more time than expected, but in the end, doing it right will save us time and trouble down the road. This episode steps through setting the first “bundle” of 16 railroad ties, giving us the base to stack everything else on top of. In future episodes we will stack 32 more railroad ties for the rest of the wall, install the retired telephone poles to keep the wall upright against all the weight of the earthen berm behind it and build the stands for all of our new targets. Giving us a fantastic pistol range and a short range (50-75 yard) rifle range. Like and hit that subscribe button so you can catch the next episode of our shooting range construction!
