Filming sailing has never been easy, especially for racing. From getting stable shots, to revealing the full field of play, the challenges of filming afloat have always been there. But when America’s Cup racing climbed up onto foils, boat speeds went through the roof making life even harder for those who were trying to follow the action. So much so, that keeping up with the current class of AC75s when the breeze and sea state were up, was simply not possible to track and film with conventional craft. The solution for the 37th America’s Cup was to put the camera boat on foils too. This proved to be a game changer. Matt Sheahan finds out why and how.
