Jonas Šopa performs Vallée d'Obermann from the Années de pèlerinage (Book I) by Franz Liszt. Recorded live during the Klaipėda Piano Masters Laureates Tour recital at the Biržai Castle, November 2019. Inspired by Étienne Pivert de Senancour's novel of the same title, set in Switzerland, with a hero overwhelmed and confused by nature, suffering from ennui and longing, finally concluding that only our feelings are true. The captions include one from Byron's succeeding canto 97, ("Could I embody and unbosom now That which is most within me,--could I wreak My thoughts upon expression, and thus throw Soul--heart--mind--passions--feelings--strong or weak-- All that I would have sought, and all I seek, Bear, know, feel--and yet breathe--into one word, And that one word were Lightning, I would speak; But as it is, I live and die unheard, With a most voiceless thought, sheathing it as a sword") and two from Senancour's Obermann, which include the crucial questions, “What do I want? Who am I? What do I ask of nature?" Jonas Šopa (1999) is a Lithuanian pianist, a prizewinner of several piano competitions internationally. He has performed in concerts and recitals in Latvia, Germany, Austria, France, as well as numerous cities in Lithuania. He is also a regular performer of chamber music, actively working as a collaborative pianist. Growing up in the small town of Mažeikiai, Jonas has also been a member of the folk ensemble Alksniokā, singing, dancing and playing bandoneon, among other traditional instruments. In January 2018 Jonas received a scholarship to attend the international piano academy ‘Feuerwerk Einbeck’ in Einbeck, Germany, as well as a scholarship by the International Rotary Club of Denmark and Ballerup Sct. Jacob Rotary Club. As of 2020, Jonas is a student of professor Jurgis Karnavičius at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. Picture by Povilas Jarmala
