'Pennies From Heaven' by Dennis Potter. Episode 6: 'Says My Heart'. Arthur's (Bob Hoskins) freedom run is blissfully cut short and he is back not in Joan's clutches but those of the law, on trial for a murder he did not commit. But his alibi is pathetic, mere 'whistling in the dark', says Prosecuting Counsel (Peter Bowles) who procedes to display his forensic skill in the form of a musical conjuring act in front of judge (Carleton Hobbs) and clerk of the court (Stanley Fleet) in cahoots with foreman of the jury (Hal Jeayes). Potter's sour take on the cronyism of the British judicial system and the fickle hand of the law is laid bare in a musical interlude to a long court sequence shot with five cameras continuously. Bowles takes centre stage hamming it up as the lip-synching magician and song and dance man in a surreal comic pastiche of film comedy aided and abetted by a delightfully camp Fleet's conjurer's assistant and a memorable performance from a whistling Hobbs, well-known for playing judges in TV dramas. Music: 'Whistling In The Dark'. Bert Ambrose and His Orchestra from the Mayfair Hotel, London. (Vocal: Sam Browne). Recorded 1931. Dennis Potter's award-winning 'Pennies From Heaven' (BBC 1978). Directed by Piers Haggard, produced by long-time Potter collaborator Kenith Trodd, with choreography and design by Tudor Davies and Tim Harvey. One of the finest pieces of television the BBC has ever produced.
