The Pacific Northwest is seeing an inordinate push for nuclear power to meet forecasts of growing energy demand, as data centers (existing and planned) exert increasing pressure on energy and water use in our region, and claim "advanced nuclear" as a necessary future source of that energy. Lloyd and Cathryn review facts about nuclear power impacts, cover Oregon's and Washington's current status relative to nuclear power, review the impacts of federal actions in this push for more nuclear power, along with the outsized influence of the nuclear lobby and big tech firms seeking favorable policies in the accelerating race for artificial intelligence dominance. Lloyd Marbet has worked full-time as an anti-nuclear activist since 1972, in both the states of Oregon and Washington. He is Executive Director of the Oregon Conservancy Foundation (since 1992), working to keep fossil fuels in the ground, opposing the resurgence of nuclear power and its Small Modular Nuclear Reactor (SMNR) designs, and promoting the use of clean renewable energy, energy efficiency, and energy conservation applications. Cathryn Chudy is a retired mental health therapist and a long-time climate activist. She is a member of the Oregon Conservancy Foundation’s Board of Directors, and associate producer of the documentary film: Atomic Bamboozle – The False Promise of a Nuclear Renaissance. She is Co-Chair of the Sierra Club's Nuclear Free Team. ---- #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #AtomicConvergence #NuclearPower #EnergyIntensive #AtomicConvergenceArtificialIntelligenceAndNuclearPower #PacificNorthwest #Oregon #Washington #LloydMarbet #CathrynChudy #NuclearPowerImpacts #GrowingEnergyDemand #DataCenters #Lobbyists #Policies #Politics #NoNuclearPower
