april is... a complicated group. i've followed them since their debut (and genuinely think dream candy is one of the most underrated debut songs of all time) and to see what became of them when they seemed to be gaining a bit of momentum is really disappointing. regardless of whether you believe the allegations or not, there was clearly a lot of hurt going on and definitely some clashing personalities, and once again a company who didn't seem to care whether the idols in their groups actually got along or not. mostly, i just feel sorry for chaekyung and rachel, they weren't even in the group with hyunjoo and yet they got dragged into the mess anyway. all that being said, april did have some absolute bops in their discography. dsp in general may be a shitty company, but their groups always have good music (well... maybe with the exception of one group which i won't name in fear). oh my mistake is still THAT girly song, and lalalilala was the kara revival i needed. here are my rankings of their official korean discography (without osts) - i hope you enjoy! if you want a brief history of april, read below: april was a girl groups who debuted under dsp media in 2015. the group was initially formed of six members - somin, chaewon, hyunjoo, naeun, yena and jinsol. somin and chaewon had both been participants in the survival show 'kara project', designed to pick a new member for the legendary group kara. april debuted with a cute, innocent concept with the song 'dream candy' member somin ended up leaving the group shortly after their debut, citing that she didn't feel comfortable with the cute concept. however she stayed with dsp and would later debut in their co-ed group kard in 2017. the group had another member change in 2016, when member hyunjoo left the group due to poor health. like somin, she also stayed under dsp entertainment. april returned in 2017 with two new members chaekyung - a popular contestant on 'produce 101' and another former participant in 'kara project' - and rachel. april continued to release music, and was beginning to pick up steam during 2020. however, in 2021, former member hyunjoo's brother went public with some disturbing accusations. the brother claimed that hyunjoo had been mercilessly bullied by her fellow members, even contributing to a suicide attempt, and this was in fact what lead to her departure from the group. hyunjoo herself made a statement in april of 2021 that backed up these claims and claimed that dsp media was not allowing her to terminate her contract with them. of course, some of the members fought back. in particular chaewon and yena both sued hyunjoo, although it was found that she was not guilty of spreading false information. these allegations came right in the middle of a wave of bullying accusations against a number of kpop idols, so the group faced heavy scrutiny, essentially halting all of their activities. april officially disbanded in january 2022. as to what the members are doing now: somin is still promoting with kard and seems to have survived the bullying accusations relatively unscathed. chaewon and jinsol are currently soloists under janggoon entertainment and story&plus respectively. chaekyung, yena and naeun are currently pursuing acting under management a.m.9, star base management group, and namoo actors respectively. there isn't any concrete information on rachel, and she appears to have left the industry. hyunjoo participated in survival show 'the unit' in 2017 and debuted in the winning project group uni.t in 2018, she is currently an actress under studio 1592. ~subscribe for more content like this!~
