Evelyn Guirguis Creative Project for Italian Sketchbook: Travel Writing and Digital Storytelling (IDSEM-UG 9205), Spring 2023 The influence of this short video is inspired by the dreamer narrative in Marcel Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time, Gaston Bachelard's book The Poetics of Space, and Cesere Pavese’s novel La Luna e i falo. These three pieces have stuck with me this semester, as I navigate through my intellectual and creative process. They all bring up notions of childhood, time, and memory. All three bodies of work have been on my mind as I have been in Florence, pondering over the notion of home. What it means to leave home, where is my home now, and how have childhood memories been infused in my later life? Harold Acton writes in his Memoirs of an Aesthete (1948) the garden of an Italian villa constitutes the natural extension of the house: at Villa La Pietra the sequence of rooms in the house and garden is developed on two perpendicular axes and provides unexpected views in all directions, both indoors and out.” So I decided for the beginning of this short video to take place in the garden as it becomes an extension of this domestic space through the spatial layout and design of the garden. Through the character's relationship with the garden, she can transport her memories involuntarily that have been influenced by her childhood.
