On the way we passed a large arched wall which is part of the ruins of a 1st century aqueduct. We also passed an entry gate to the Palatine Hill. Near the Colosseum we passed the Arch of Constantine, built in 315AD. The Colosseum was completed in 80AD. We stopped opposite the south side of the Colosseum. The bus then turned south. Next stop was the Basilica of St John. This, not St Peters, is the Cathedral of Rome & is where the Pope, as the Bishop of Rome, has his seat. From here the bus travelled north around the west side of Rome. We passed the 5th century Basilica of Mary Major & the Piazza dell Esquilino with its 25 mtr high obelisk. Next we passed through Piazza della Republica which marks the centre of Rome and is home to the 1888 Fountain della Naiadi. The bus then headed across the top of the city past more Roman gates. The Porta del Popolo is one of the more decorative gates. Then over the Tiber River, before following the river south to Vatican City.
