Clementi Mall is the commercial component of Clementi Towers, an HDB (Housing and Development Board) estate consisting of two 40-story public housing buildings (Blocks 441A and 441B) as well as an office of the West Coast Town Council, a shopping mall, a transport interchange and a public library. The residential towers were located directly above the retail podium, which housed all other components of the development. The mall had eight floors above ground and two below, with the bus interchange taking up the majority of its first two floors. The first floor also had several shops, including a convenience store and several streetside cafes. The second floor was also home to the aforementioned Town Council office. Level 3, which was the mall’s main floor, was connected directly to Clementi station via a footbridge, and mainly consisted of apparel and accessories shops. A BHG department store had been on that floor since the mall’s opening (and was still operational when this video was taken), but had closed in March 2022; that space is due to be filled in by Uniqlo. Level 4 had a large food court as well as electronics shops. Level 5 was home to the Clementi Public Library, alongside a bookstore, hair salons, and several restaurants. Levels 6 and 7 contained a parking garage, while level 8 served as the void deck for the apartments and only served by the residential elevators. The first basement had a FairPrice Finest store, more restaurants, and a taxi stand, while the second basement had loading bays and parking for service vehicles. Excluding the residential elevators, the mall had a total of six elevators, with four passenger and two service cars. Two of the passenger elevators were at the east side right next to Clementi MRT station, while the other two were at the west side. This video features the bank of passenger elevators at the east, also called Lobby A. They served the first basement as well as floors up to 5, though one of them did not serve level 2. They had keyhole-shaped cabs, with the rear wall made entirely out of glass, providing a view of the train station and the public plaza next to it. They were Fujitec’s geared units, and had Dewhurst fixtures standardized for HDB projects. Their cabs were pretty small, hence the heavy crowding at times. While being a little bit shaky, they still did the job of handling the influx of patrons from the station.
