Long-Segment Colonic Interposition for Esophageal Atresia: 3D Animation

The long-sement colonic interposition procedure may be a surgical option for children who have long-gap esophageal atresia or whose esophagus has been severely damanged. Normally, the esophagus connects the mouth to the stomach allowing food and saliva to pass into the gastrointestinal tract. However, in some conditions the entire length of the esophagus is unusable and needs to be replaced. This can be from congenital absence of the esophagus (esophageal atresia) or damage from caustic ingestion or multiple previous operations. In this procedure a segment of colon is used to connect the long gap from the esophagus in the neck to the stomach in the abdomen.
