A day sailing from Emsworth in Hayling Island Bay with the multi-talented Matt Ottewill (musician, composer, animator web genius) and his son Finn, natural-born-helmsman. We had gentle breeze and then enough wind for a rooster-tail in our wake as we blasted along at about 8-9 knots! We even ripped the mainsheet car off the Tufnol track... well it is 40 years old and being replaced for 2015. Three men in search of an angle... filming with iPhone, GoPro and SLR Canon! Matt edited the movie. The musical accompaniment is composed and sung by Matt's older son, Billy. Here's a link to his music on SoundCloud: / billybell Phoenix is a stretched Tony Smith-designed Telstar Trimaran – originally 26ft now 9m – which I've owned for 21 years. She is hull No. 136, and one of the last of the MK 2 Telstars, built at Sandwich in Kent by AJS Sandwich Yacht Construction. She was launched as 'Flutterbye' in 1976 by her first owner J.S. Gunn, and 14 years later wrecked when she dragged her mooring in Chichester Harbour in January 1990. It was the night of the Burns' Day storm, which killed some 89 people. Washed ashore beside Emsworth Marina, she was rescued by custom boat-builder David Kay who spent 18 months re-building her and re-launched her as Phoenix... rising from the ashes. I bought her from David in March 1994 and he helped me greatly when I gave her a second major 8-month refit in 2013. For a multihull that's almost 40 years old, she still stands the test of time with a cleverly designed cockpit, good accommodation and fun sailing performance.
