Many sources place it around the 8th–10th centuries (early medieval Sri Lanka). A pillar inscription is often cited as evidence of Buddhist monastic use. The layout resembles a Hindu temple plan: mandapa (hall) + inner sanctuary + walkway around the core. The structure was dismantled and reconstructed in the 20th century to protect it from rising waters (commonly linked to the Bowatenna reservoir project area).
