Kleve Zoo is a zoo in Kleve (Nordrhein-Westfalen). It houses around 350 animals, with a focus on mostly old, endangered domestic animal breeds . As part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), it also keeps parti-coloured tamarins and red pandas . It is run by the Kleve Zoo Association. Since January 2021, the 6-hectare park has been managed by qualified veterinarian Martin Polotzek. Under the new management, the park is also doing more to protect endangered wild animals: Maras and armadillos have also lived in the zoo since 2021. A species protection day was also held for the first time in 2021. A special feature of the "family zoo" is the proximity to the animals, with visitors being able to hand-feed most of the animals using food available in the park. A new master plan will determine the future direction of the park. For example, new enclosures for pygmy marmosets and red pandas were already built in 2023 , showing the species' authentic habitats. With around 200,000 guests in 2024, it is the most visited leisure facility in Kleve. On June 23, 2022, Kleve Zoo presented its new master plan, Tiergarten Kleve 20+ , which aims to transform the zoo into a modern nature and species conservation center. In eight themed areas, visitors will be able to experience both endangered farm animals and wild animals threatened with extinction up close. In addition to a new seal enclosure and the construction of a walk-in penguin enclosure, the largest bald eagle enclosure in Europe is also to be built. Other planned themed areas include South America, Asia, Africa, a demonstration farm, and a walk-in Australian aviary with budgies and Parma kangaroos . The female red panda "Kamala" has lived in Kleve Zoo since June 2022 and became known for her painting skills: Using finger paint on her paws, she painted unique pictures, which Kleve Zoo sold for a good cause. Part of the proceeds went to the Red Panda Network species conservation project in Nepal , and the other part to the construction of the new red panda enclosure in Kleve Zoo.
