The Great Tenasserim River, also known as the Mother Ternawthery River, is around 450 kilometers long. This beautiful river is located in Ternawthery, Kawthoolei. I am grateful to have been born in this region and to be back here. I'm also glad to have witnessed Mother Ternawthery's beauty and importance. This river provides a unique combination of natural beauty and cultural experiences. It flows through the Tanintharyi Region, past Tanintharyi, and into the sea at Myeik (Mergui). Let me tell you that waters of Mother Ternawthery team with fish and aquatic creatures. The forests and fields along its banks are green and verdant. All life, human and all other life forms in the Ternawthery region depend on it for sustenance. The villagers water their fields after the monsoon rains are gone with channels of water from Ternawthery River. Moreover, the local villagers draw water for cooking, sanitation and laundry. Some indigenous people pan for gold in the water.
