Ben Mitchell, who writes songs and plays guitar for Debbie and the Downers, teaches kids how to read in Vermont. Here's the words: Friends Everywhere © Benjamin Mitchell 2026 Two hundred fifty years ago today, The mood was grim: the situation seemed gray. There were guys with wigs, and almost 300 ships The king told the people to shut up and pay. But the good lord made us equal, don’t you know. So they stood their ground through the bullets and the snow. From the tip top of Maine to Georgia down below. Everyone agreed that the King Must go There’re more of us than them even though the billionaires might have friends. Never been a climb, wasn’t followed by a fall. The harder they hold that line won’t be a single place that they can hide Cause’ most of them friends ain't real friends after all. And I have friends everywhere till they fall. Old Vanderbilt owned the tracks and the ties And Jay Gould told about a hundred thousand lies. They built their castles on the broken backs of workers who were livin in scrap wood shacks. They had all the gold and they had all the guns even thought they owned our daughters and sons. But the gears got jammed and the tracks got slow When the people decided the kings must go. There’re more of us than them even though the billionaires might have friends. Never been a climb, wasn’t followed by a fall. The harder they hold that line won’t be a single place that they can hide Cause’ most of them friends ain't real friends after all. And I have friends everywhere till they fall. Now the names have changed but the story's just the same They’re playing with the planet like a video game. They talk about "freedom" while they watchin what you do Trying to make a new world that works only for the few. They can buy the airwaves and the courthouse floor But they can’t bolt the lock on every single door. Don't worry about the pedos, those masters of greed Every generation’s got to pull some weeds. There’re more of us than them even though the billionaires might have friends. Never been a climb, wasn’t followed by a fall. The harder they hold that line won’t be a single place that they can hide Cause’ most of them friends ain't real friends after all. And I have friends everywhere till they fall.
