CYPRUS - Varosha, Famagusta Ghost Town Walk through. February 2026. 2 of 5.

In February 2026 I travelled to Cyprus to escape the awful UK weather, not really planning on going to the North side. I hadn't realised you could access the abandoned town of Varosha in Famagusta easily, so headed there to have a look. In the early 1970s it used to be a nice modern tourist town, until 1974 when the Turkish army took control and it was abandoned. In 2017 talks between Cyprus, Turkey and the UN began with the purpose of re populating the town, but there has been no agreement except to let tourists visit in its current decaying state. I understand the issue is controversial and suggest you do your own research if you want to know any more. The area is fenced off from the surrounding town and there is only 1 official gated entrance. It is patrolled by police and UN security and is free to go in. All buildings have signs warning of the danger of entering them but previously people did come in to loot them. I visited in the afternoon straight after arriving in Famagusta, then for most of the following day, which was a Saturday. There were quite a lot of people visiting, but many were just taking a stroll. On Saturday afternoon there did seem to be some tour groups and it was a bit harder to keep them out of the videos. As usual, this is just me walking around with no music or commentary.
