Thanjavur, also known as Tanjore, is a historic city located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It served as the capital of the great Chola Empire during its golden period between the 9th and 13th centuries. The city is famous for its rich cultural heritage, classical art, music, and architecture. The most prominent landmark in Thanjavur is the Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as the Big Temple, which was built by Raja Raja Chola I in the 11th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thanjavur is also known for its royal palace complex, the Saraswathi Mahal Library with ancient manuscripts, and the exquisite bronze sculptures made using the lost-wax method. The city is a center of South Indian classical music and dance, especially the Bharatanatyam form. Thanjavur paintings, known for their rich colors, gold foil work, and intricate detailing, are world-renowned. Agriculture, especially rice cultivation, plays a vital role in the local economy, and the region is often called the “Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu.” With its blend of spirituality, art, and tradition, Thanjavur remains one of the most important cultural destinations in South India.
