This video demonstrates how to perform both the Ortalani and Barden test to assess canine hips for laxity. The videos are of anaesthetised dogs undergoing assessment during the course of a scheduled clinical work up. The detection of hip laxity is an important predictor of the risk of an individual going on to develop arthritis in the hips at a later age. The tests demonstrated here, although an important test to perform, are only subjective assessments of laxity (based on the clinician's interpretation of the amount of laxity). PennHip radiological assessment (performed by trained and certified clinician) is needed to objectively assess (put numbers to amount of laxity). The performance of the Ortalani and Barden tests are performed on heavily sedated or anaesthetized patients. This is because they can be painful in dogs with lax hips plus the muscle tone in a conscious dog can mask hip laxity. These tests are commonly performed during a standard work up of hind limb lameness, especially in younger dogs (less than 2 years).
