Situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi, it is a city of splendours and is famous for its silk. It was made the capital of Bengal in 1717. The British shifted the capital to Kolkata in 1773. Jagat Seth family The Jagat Seth family was a wealthy merchant, banker and money lender family from Murshidabad in Bengal during the time of the Nawabs of Bengal. The house was founded by Jain Hiranand Shah from Nagaur, Rajasthan, who came to Patna in 1652. In 1707, Manikchand helped Prince Farrukhsiyar financially to become the Mughal Emperor. In award, Farrukhsiyar conferred the title of Jagat Seth on Manik Chand, the head of the family, meaning "banker or merchant of the world". This indicates the favour the family had gained at the Mughal court. Museum The house of the Jagat Seths, complete with a secret tunnel as well as an underground chamber, where illegal trade plans were hatched, has been converted into museum. House of Jagat Seth Museum was established in 1980. It is privately managed. It contains personal possessions of the Jagat Seth family including coins of the bygone era, muslin and other extravagant clothes, Banarasi sarees embroidered with gold and silver threads. Tomb of Azimunissa Begum: Tomb of Azimunissa Begum is located at Azimnagar (oid Murshidabad), in the Murshidabad district.According to the List of Monuments of National Importance in West Bengal the Tomb of Azimunissa Begum is an ASI Listed Monument.Azimunissa Begum (also known as Zinatunissa Begum) was daughter of Murshid Quli Khan and wife of the second Nawab of Bengal, Shuja-ud-Din Muhammad Khan. A mosque was built at the place in 1734 by her, but it was partly washed away by a river and only a small part of it remains. The place has well laid out gardens. There is a local myth in circulation that she was a cruel woman and her husband had buried her alive. However, it is hearsay and not confirmed history. The tomb of Azimunissa Begum is built below the stairs, just like that of her father. It is said that Nawab Murshid Quli Khan had ordered out of humility that his mortal remains be buried below the steps of the Katra Masjid, so as to be trodden on by all who passed up and down. Jafarganj Cemetery : Opposite the Deuri, 1.5 km north of Hazarduari is the Zafraganj Cemetery. There are more than 1000 burial sites of Mirzafar and his family here. Along the gate, third from the eastern end lied Mirzafar. Mirzafar's wives Mani Begum and Baboo Begum were also laid to rest in this graveyard.
